  2. But, it becomes a problem when your phone heats up to the point where you cannot even hold it.

  • As the first step to cool off your phone, try removing its back case cover.
  • A back case cover traps the heat generated by the phone and increases the temperature significantly.
  • Taking the case off will allow the phone’s heat vents to do their job fully without being blocked.
  • Now check if your phone works without heating up. If the problem is fixed, then you must consider changing the case or not using it at all.

2. Close the background apps.

  • Typically, multiple apps keep running in the background, and you don’t even know they are there.
  • These apps stress the processing abilities of the smartphone and result in overheating. Always make sure you close these apps running in the background.
  • Also, most of the apps installed on your phone have the background sync enabled. Try keeping the important ones synced while you can turn off background sync for other apps.

3. Check the signal strength. Optimize phone settings.

  • In an area where the mobile signals are weak, it is typical for the phone to get heated up.
  • This is precisely because the processor has to put more emphasis on the mobile antenna to reach out for signals. In such a scenario, it is better to put your phone on airplane mode or switch it off.
  • Services like Bluetooth, mobile data, and GPS take a toll on your device. Enable them only when required and later turn off.
  • Keeping the screen at a reasonable brightness and not at full blast will take some strain off your phone’s processor (also your eyes).

4. Are the environmental factors acting up?

  • This seems like a silly piece of advice, but it can be quite easy to forget about your phone when you’re outside soaking up the sun.
  • Extreme temperatures are never good for any electronic gadgets.
  • Furthermore, don’t leave your phone behind in the car. Temperatures can rise quite rapidly in a car parked outside.

5. Update the phone software and apps.

  • Try looking at some of the apps you’ve recently installed. It’s possible one of the apps has a bug that’s causing your phone to overheat.
  • Updating the app usually fixes this kind of problem. If not, try uninstalling it.
  • Furthermore, get rid of junk and unused apps on your phone.

6. Stop overloading your phone with continuous gaming and streaming content.

  • A few high-intensity games use your Android or iPhone’s central processing cores in addition to the graphics processing unit, making it very hot.
  • Binge-watching videos for hours is another surefire way to overwork your phone’s processor.
  • Truth be told, anything that keeps your phone screen lit for long periods will cause the device to heat up.
  • A good rule of thumb is to take a 15 to 20 minutes break every few hours when playing games or streaming videos.

7. Has a malware sneaked in?

  • An overheating phone can also be a sign that your phone is infected with malware.
  • Malware not only steals private information from your phone but also maxes out the processor’s computing power causing overheating.
  • Using a trusted antivirus like Kaspersky Mobile Antivirus is the best way to prevent malware from harming your Android phone. While the scenario is much rarer on the iPhone, it can still happen.

8. Use an app to cool down the hot phone.

  • If your phone continues to overheat after trying the above solutions, then using an app to solve the problem can be your next best bet.
  • For Android phones, the Play Store has several apps that can help resolve overheating problems in diverse ways.
    • Cooling Master – The app is exclusively designed to reliably detect overheating in phones and cease it by halting the apps that are throttling the processor.
    • Greenify – It helps your phone run more efficiently by hibernating apps that you don’t use at the moment.
  • No such apps exist for the iPhone, though!

9. Are you charging your device properly?

  • If you want your device to stay cool and also maintain its battery life, make sure to charge it properly.
  • Phones usually get hot while charging. Avoid keeping it on the sofa or bed, which traps heat. Instead, keep it on a hard surface.
  • Often, the phone overheating is due to a poor-quality charging cable or a damaged battery. First, try replacing the cable. If this doesn’t help, it’s time to think about replacing the battery.
  • Please avoid using the third-party chargers or batteries. Cheap counterfeits can save you some money initially but will eventually wreak havoc on your smartphone’s working.

10. Reset the phone to factory settings.

  • When everything else fails, a factory reset is the last resort to resolve most phone problems.
  • Just make sure you create a data backup before you try resetting the phone so that you do not lose anything.
  • Once the phone restarts, check if it works without overheating. If the problem is resolved, you can recover the data and begin using your phone as usual.
  • However, if the overheating persists, then you must take the phone to the service center or your carrier. If it’s under warranty, you may be able to get it repaired without charges or even get a replacement for it.
